Let off some steam, Bennett

I was just reading the lastest polls and it seems relatively unlikely that Arnold Schwarzenegger won't be California's next governor.

It was funny when his Predator co-star did it up in the frozen hinterlands. This time, I'm starting to get scared. If you're into pattern recognition, I'm not sure what Carl Weathers' residency is looking like but he's a lock for gubernatorial success somewhere out there. Apollo Creed in 2004, you heard it here first.

I like the outsider we elected here in New York. I think Bloomberg's done a decent job during a difficult time and I'd vote for him again. Sadly, I think the guy deserves better than all the grief he's gotten from the press and who's going to blame him when he goes back to being a billionaire and leaves us to the graces of some career politician.

Then again, Bloomberg came to the dance with some actual ideas that weren't hastily cribbed out of some GOP intro-to-policy PowerPoint deck. He came with some ideas and actual platform and an enormous amount of personal credibility.

Voting out of the box doesn't bother me. It's when we get down to voting because they're famous that I get pretty nervous. And it's when we get down to election people we think we know and like because they portrayed a character we identified with in a movie, well that's freaking scary as all get-out.

Other than President, is there any office Tom Hanks couldn't get elected to right now? Where does Matt Damon want to be governor, maybe in a state next to wherever Affleck is a congressman? This is what it's come down to. It's not that there is a place that's better at choosing its leaders in an informed way--it's just that I am continually disappointed that we can do all these other amazing things as a country, but when it comes to choosing leaders, this is the very best we can do. I personally don't believe that for even a picosecond.

But hey, actors-turned-governor in California never go on to screw anything else larger up. What, me worry?
